This is a difficult question to answer because it all depends on the circumstances, however if a hoof puncture has been identified then do seek immediate professional assistance.
How is a hoof puncture wound treated?
Prevention is better than cure. It is best practice to protect your horse’s feet by using appropriate hoof shoe covers, but if you do notice any problem then you must know that only a professional vet may be able to help, and recovery will take time.
